SuLE (Soo-Lay)
Sule (Soo-Lay) has been playing music since the age of five and has
been plugging away on his music career for roughly the past15 years. A
music career is a multi faceted enterprise involving different disciplines
and skill sets and Sule has been cultivating as many as possible. He began
as a student of the piano but quickly switched to the guitar. Singing,
songwriting and a naturally good ear came as gifts to Sule and he's used
these to launch himself in various directions.
While playing in rock bands in school, Sule studied classical guitar,
from where he gleaned his "no pick" finger playing style. He soon went on
to study Jazz while leading and fronting the funk rock group Tribal
Groove. At the same time, Sule experimented with Jump Jive and swing in
the group Atomic Cocktail and sang and played guitar for the
internationally known "Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir". The choir became
a favorite of Celine Dion's, and Sule got to test his mettle as a soloist
for the MJGC opening up for Celine's sold out crowds. Tribal Groove also
stayed busy releasing the EP "Party At The Sun" featuring many of Sule's
compositions, and playing dates in Canada as well as New York City and Las
Vegas.
Eventually the time came to move on and Sule could be heard plying his
skills as a guitarist for various pop groups. He toured with the Canadian
group Sky (EMI), One Ton (Warner), Corneille (Wagram) and Gage (Wagram),
bringing him not only all over Canada, but also to Europe and North
Africa. In addition to that, his guitar work can be heard on albums such
as Bet-E and Steph's (Universal) self-titled debut. All the while Sule was
writing his own material and learning the studio skills one needs to
engineer and produce. Some of this work, a track called "Song for Lea",
can be heard on the compilation "Café Mélies Vol. 1" (Jajou). Shortly
after Café Mélies' release the Black Theater Workshop honored Sule with
the Gloria Mitchell-Aleong award for excellence in the arts for his body
of work. As another feather in his cap, Sule struck a deal with "Elite
Guitars Canada" putting him among some of the nation's best acts, and
setting him up with some of the coolest new guitars on the market.
Sule has completed two albums, "The Fall" and the follow up album
"Alive". The style is predominantly Rock, but rich undertones ranging from
Reggae and Blues to Funk and Jazz, have been masterfully weaved into a
coherent style unique to Sule. He's put together a stellar band that
boasts some of the most dedicated and driven young musicians around. They
are Brandon Libman on bass, Mike Dall on guitar and Derek Wiltshire on
drums. Collectively they put on a vibrant, dynamic and intense show and
together are known as "Sule and the Modern Day Kings". With an ear for
greatness, they are a cut above the pack. To see what happens next, just
stay tuned.
SuLE (Soo-Lay), a homegrown talent, has helped shape the musical
landscape locally, nationally and beyond. He has been a member of The
Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir, Sky and One Ton, performed on Bet E and
Steph's debut album and played guitar on tour for artists such as
Corneille and Gage. His original work has been on radio, TV and is
featured on one of Montreal's more prestigious compilation series, Café
Melies.
Now, with 'The Fall" (2008) and the latest release "Alive" (2009), SuLE
returns to his roots, Rock n' Roll. On May 28th he launches "Alive", the
follow up to last years "The Fall". While "The Fall" set the stage,
"Alive" is truly the second act, increasing in depth and gaining
intensity.
The new release from SuLE is an action-packed exposition of the
artist's energy, soul, and emotion. He has transcended genre, style, race
and class to create this new collection of tunes that revel in the rich
influences of '70s and '80s rock, soul, and funk.
SuLE is widely regarded as one of Canada's most respected
singer-songwriters. He's also a multi-talented instrumentalist, producer
and arranger, which resonates throughout his albums, culminating into what
is guaranteed to be viewed to be timeless as his career rages on.
